REACH Lab Awards & News 2024

  • Doctoral student Allison Tobar-Santamaria successfully defended her thesis, "Proximal Associations between Alcohol Use, Cannabis Use, and Intimate Partner Sexual Violence Perpetration and Victimization: Differences Across Men and Women."

  • PI Meagan Brem received a grant from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA; R21AA031548) for her study, "Daily Impact of Sexual Minority Stress on Alcohol-Related Intimate Partner Violence 
    among Bisexual+ Young Adults: A Couples' Daily Diary Study." Co-Is include Drs. Brian Feinstein (Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science), Ryan Shorey (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee), and Alexandra Hanlon (Virginia Tech's Center for Biostatistics and Health Data Science).

  • PI Meagan Brem featured on Curious Conversations podcast episode, "Alcohol Use and Intimate Partner Violence with Meagan Brem."

  • Doctoral student Allison Tobar-Santamaria and PI Meagan Brem presented a talk at the Research Society on Alcohol's annual scientific meeting in Minneapolis in June.

  • PI Meagan Brem was awarded flash funding from Virginia Tech's Whole Health Consortium for her project, "Developing an mHealth Intervention to Reduce Partner Violence among Heavy-Drinking Adults: A Community-Engaged Design Approach." Team members include Drs. Robert Trestman (VT Carilion School of Medicine), Sang Won Lee (VT Computer Science), Sooraj John (VT Carilion School of Medicine), and Keith Fender (Certified Domestic Violence Counselor), and Sara Boucher (Addiction Services, Carilion Clinic).

  • Alongside team members Drs. Liz Courtney (Salem VA), Teresa Johnson (VT Carilion School of Medicine), Christopher Grubb (VT Biostatistics), Theresa McCann (VT Carilion School of Medicine), and Dan Blalock (Duke University School of Medicine and Durham VA), Meagan Brem was awarded flash funding for project "Using a Whole Health Approach to Address Comorbid Alcohol Use Disorder and Chronic Pain."

  • Doctoral student Allison Tobar-Santamaria presented her research on campus sexual assault emails to VT students and administrators at VT's annual Sexual Violence Prevention Initiative Summit in April.

  • PI Meagan Brem presented data on alcohol use as a proximal antecedent to intimate partner and sexual violence at VT's annual Sexual Violence Prevention Initiative Summit in April.

  • PI Meagan Brem featured on WVTF, "Deaths of two teens in Blacksburg leads to conversations about dating violence."

  • Research Assistant Julia Krugh was awarded Mary Nolen Blackwood Endowed Scholarship for undergraduate Psychology rising juniors.

  • Doctoral student Allison Tobar-Santamaria was awarded a 2024 Best Research Poster Award for her poster, "Campus sexual assault email alerts: Do students find them helpful?" presented at the VT Psychology Department's inaugural DEI Poster Session.

  • PI Meagan Brem received the Deborah L. Rhatigan Early Career Award for Excellence in Violence Research from the ABCT Child Maltreatment and Interpersonal Violence Special Interest Group

  • PI Meagan Brem received a grant from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA; R21AA030858) to provide 2 years of funding for her project, "Integrating Remote Breath Alcohol Monitoring into Ecological Momentary Assessment of Alcohol-Related Intimate Partner Violence among Young Adult Drinkers." Co-Is include Drs. Warren Bickel (Virginia Tech's Fralin Biomedical Research Institute), Dennis McCarthy (University of Missouri), and Alexandra Hanlon (Virginia Tech's Center for Biostatistics and Health Data Science).

  • PI Meagan Brem received the Lay Nam Chang Dean’s Discovery Fund from the Virginia Tech College of Science to fund her project, "Sexual Minority Stress and Alcohol-Related Intimate Partner Violence among Bisexual+ Couples: A Daily Diary Feasibility Study."
