GRADUATE STUDENTS

Dr. Brem will not be accepting a PhD student to begin during the 2026/2027 academic year. Learn more about Virginia Tech's Clinical Science Ph.D. program and application procedures

Typically, Dr. Brem looks to recruit graduate students who are excited about (1) scientific writing and dissemination, (2) addressing barriers to safety and well-being in relationships and communities, (3) learning advanced statistical analyses (e.g., using intensive longitudinal modeling), and (4) team-based approaches to science. Skills and traits that are likely to contribute to success in our lab and our research-focused Clinical Science PhD program include, but are not limited to: Attention to detail, persistence, an ability to tolerate uncertainty, an eagerness to develop deeper knowledge within the field, strong writing skills, strong quantitative skills, a willingness to be challenged, regular engagement with the latest articles in our field, reliability, an ability to work independently and within groups, leadership skills, social adeptness, and excellent time management.

Dr. Brem has an exceptional record of undergraduate student mentorship. Several of Dr. Brem's undergraduate mentees have presented at national conferences, published in peer-reviewed journals, and been accepted to graduate programs. For those interested in pursuing graduate school, the REACH Lab has excellent opportunities to gain exposure to all stages of the research process, including participant recruitment and screening procedures, intensive longitudinal data collection, data management, and scientific dissemination. Research assistants work closely with our PhD students to develop foundational research skills to prepare undergraduates for future research positions and graduate school.

Undergraduate Research Assistants may work in the REACH Lab on either volunteer or course credit basis, though students must enroll for course credit during their first semester in our lab. Research assistants must maintain 9 hours of availability per week. A three semester commitment (e.g., fall, spring, summer; fall, spring, fall) is required. Students should be in good academic standing (typically a GPA of 3.5 or greater) before applying to assist in our lab. Email Dr. Brem at mbrem@vt.edu to inquire about laboratory openings and request a Research Assistant application.
